IIT Kharagpur believes in treating its students like young adults. In general most students find life orderly and congenial in the campus. While the students, as adult citizens of the country enjoy their rights, they also are expected to be aware of their responsibilities. The institute will not support any act that is illegal as construed by the law of the land. The institute will also not support the transgression and violation of any prohibition imposed by the institute administration from time to time. As adults, the students are expected to have a fair sense of which act is legal and what is illegal. They should conduct themselves both inside and outside the institute in a manner that is befitting of an institute of this stature. In addition to being mature and responsible in conduct, the students are expected to respect the rights of the other members of the IIT community. The institute encourages an all round development of students' personality and their progressive and creative thinking. At the same time, in order that they effectively discharge civic responsibilities, the Institute sets its own terms of conduct that must be adhered to by the students. The institute can take action, if these terms are violated, through different Senate Committees.

Social Conduct

1. Ragging is illegal and punishable in strictest and most exemplary terms as per the ruling of the Supreme Court of India.
2. Possession and use of narcotic substances is illegal. Consumption of alcohol or gambling or is strictly prohibited in the campus.
3. Smoking in public areas is prohibited and may attract disciplinary action against violators.
4. All the conduct rules that are applicable to the students of different hostels, conveyed from time to time through the Hall Management Committee/ Wardens/ TSG, available at www.iitkgp.ac.in/deans, must be complied with.
5. Each student must show due respect and courtesy to the Institute teachers, administrators, officers, employees, visitors, and residents. They must not infringe upon the rights of fellow students.
6. In the event of proceeding on unscheduled leave on account of illness, family matter, etc, student must inform the Warden, Dean (Student Affairs), Faculty Adviser and the concerned Head of the Department.
7. The institute facilities/amenities such as library, internet, playgrounds, hostels, gymkhana, laboratories and classrooms must be used responsibly. Any willful damage and misuse of the facilities/amenities constitutes an act of indiscipline.
8. No student is permitted to keep any motorized vehicle in the campus. Exceptions are made for QIP students, sponsored students, persons with physical disability and defense personnel through specific prior permission from Dean (Students' Affairs).
9. In the event of an illegal activity in the campus, the institute is obligated to permit the intervention by police and judicial authorities.
10. In the event of students' involvement in any activity outside the campus which is punishable by the law of the land, the institute shall in no way provide any support to them and will not be responsible either for their action.
11. The Warden of the concerned Hall of Residence shall have power to reprimand or impose fine or take any other such suitable measure against any resident of the Hall, who violates the conduct rules. All major acts of indiscipline, which may have serious implications on the general body of students, and which may warrant a uniform and more formalized nature of investigation, shall be handled by the Students Disciplinary Committee. Based on the recommendations of this committee the Director as the Chairman, Senate approves the punishment recommended. The standing Disciplinary Committee consists of the following ex-officio and other members:
1. Dean (Students' Affairs) - Chairman
2. Dean (FoE&A) - Member
3. Dean (FoS) - Member
4. Dean (FoBTBS) - Member
5. One Faculty nominated by the Senate, by rotation for two years- Member
6. Chairman, Hall Management Committee - Member
7. Warden of the Hall of Residence of which the student concerned is a boarder - Member
8. Student Vice-President, Technology Students' Gymkhana - Member
9. One of the student representatives in the Senate, to be nominated by the Dean (Students' Affairs), for one year (UG/PG/RS/Women) - Member
10. The Joint Registrar (Academic) - Member Secretary

In addition, the Chairman may invite any other person(s) to be associated with the proceedings of a particular case, if his/their participation is considered necessary in disposing of the matter.
11. A student who feels aggrieved by the punishment can appeal to the Chairman, Senate stating clearly the reasons for seeking redress.
12. For an offence committed (a) in the Department or a classroom and (b) in a Hall of Residence or anywhere within the campus premisesw, the Head of the Department, and the Warden/ Dean (Students' Affairs), respectively, shall have the authority to reprimand or impose fine or take any other suitable measure. All cases involving punishment other than reprimand shall be reported to the Chairman of the Standing Disciplinary Committee.
13. Cases of adoption of unfair means in an examination shall be dealt with by the Committee on Examination Malpractice consisting of the following members:
    1. Professor-in-Charge of Examination - Chairman
    2. Head of the Department to which the reported student belongs - Member
    3. The Invigilator reporting the case - Member
    4. The Invigilator-in-Charge of the Examination Hall concerned - Member
    5. The Paper-setter concerned - Member
    6. Two members of faculty nominated by the Undergraduate Program & Evaluation Committee for a term of two years - Members
    7. The Assistant Registrar (Academic) - Secretary

The Committee shall recommend appropriate measures in each case to the Chairman of the Senate for awarding the punishment.
